Municipal Election Workers (Temporary)

The County of Northern Lights is seeking Election Workers to participate in the upcoming 2025 Municipal Election dated for Monday, October 20, 2025.

These positions are temporary only. 

The County has seven (7) Electoral Wards:

  • WARD 1: Weberville/Stewart
  • WARD 2: Warrensville/Lac Cardinal
  • WARD 3: Dixonville/Chinook Valley
  • WARD 4: Deadwood/Sunny Valley
  • WARD 5: North Star/ Breaking Point
  • WARD 6: Hotchkiss/Hawk Hills
  • WARD 7: Keg River/Carcajou

If more than one (1) candidate nomination is received for an electoral ward, that ward will have an election. It is convenient to have the polling station workers from the same ward; however, it is not necessary. Polling station workers can submit their ballot in one of the Advanced Polling Days.

Election workers will be required:

  • to undertake the mandatory training session held at the County office and to watch the training videos online on the Government of Alberta website
  • to work on Election Day in one of the Ward’s polling stations
  • to be present approximately one hour before and after polling station hours
  • to stay at the voting station for the entire shift and until all duties are complete
  • to secure own transportation to and from training & polling station

ADVANCED VOTING DAYS:

  • Thursday, October 9th, 2025 
  • Saturday, October 18th, 2025
  • Voting hours are 10:00am to 8:00pm (hrs to work-9:30am to approximately 8:30pm)
  • Voting stations for Advanced Polls will be conducted at the County Office 

ELECTION DAY

  • Monday, October 20, 2025
  • Voting hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Workers will need to arrive one hour before for set-up and be prepared to stay one hour after for ballot counting and tear-down.

REMUNERATION

Workers will be paid according to Council’s Remuneration Policy and Travel Policy for their mileage to and from and their time.

  • Mileage: current CRA rates: 0.72 cents per kilometer
  • Full day (4-8 hours) $250.00
  • Half day (≤4 hours)  $130.00

(Council’s Remuneration Policy is under review. The above rates are subject to change)

RESPONSIBILITES

There will be one Presiding Deputy Returning Officer and one Deputy Returning Officer at each polling station. All election workers are to ensure that the election is conducted in a transparent and fair manner, remaining impartial while performing their duties and respecting and maintaining the secrecy of the vote.

Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO)

  • Overall responsibility of the election process at the Polling station,
  • Responsible for setup and cleanup of the Polling station,
  • Responsible for the security of ballots,
  • Signing forms,
  • Delivering of ballot count, ballots and election materials back to the Returning Officer,
  • Main point of contact with the Returning Officer.

Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)

  • Ensuring the voting process is carried out in an impartial and efficient manner,
  • Assist in setup and cleanup of the Polling Station,
  • Assist the PDRO,
  • Assist in the counting of ballots,
  • Signing forms as required.
