Policies

Policies: What are they?

Policies are principles or guidelines which assist the County in making day-to-day decisions and in achieving its mandate as established by the Municipal Government Act. They give definition to the philosophy of the Council and provide for the establishment of consistent operational procedures. Communications that document the purpose, principles, and direction to be followed to achieve objectives.

Why develop policies?

A policy is an extension, and to a large degree, an expression of County philosophy. What the Council believes about delivering local government programs and services in the County is reflected through the policies that guide its actions.

Policy helps define the role of the Council and/or the Administration in delivering local government programs and services. Councillors who clearly understand Council Policy have little or no trouble finding satisfaction in serving in a meaningful way.

Policies provide consistency in the way the County operates. When based on a common policy, procedures will not lead the County in different directions.

Policies also serve the useful function of controlling activities so that they follow the course of development outlined in the County’s Strategic Plan.

Another benefit of having policies is the measure of legal protection provided when all else has been done to safeguard persons and property involved in the delivery of local government
