Public Engagement & Awareness

Did you know that STARS Ambulance started in 1985 with one helicopter serving approximately 1.4 million people in Alberta and was initially named Lions Air Ambulance Service?

Now, over 40 years later, STARS has a fleet of 10 Airbus H145 helicopters operating from 6 bases across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and has flown over 63,000 missions.

The County of Northern Lights has been a proud STARS municipal partner since 2007. In fact, 95% of Alberta municipalities are in partnership with STARS!

The County's partnership with STARS supports flight operations from the base in Grande Prairie, which serves the northern region of Alberta.

Some of the stats from the 2025 County of Northern Lights Ally Impact Report include;

  • 4 missions in the County in 2025
  • 21 total missions in the County from 2021-2025
  • 1,540 missions in Alberta in 2025

STARS operates 24/7, 365 days per year, providing more than just a means of transportation. They also provide critical care, whether it's by air, ground, or satellite link and have a world-class team of flight nurses, paramedics, pilots, and transport physicians.
