Today, PREA proudly released its Position Paper on the potential advancement of nuclear energy development in the Province of Alberta, indicating its strong and bold support for positioning itself as a leader and advocate for economic prosperity in Northwestern Alberta.
The Peace Regional Energy Alliance (PREA) brings together municipal leaders from across the Peace Region to provide a unified, region-first voice on major energy and economic development opportunities. PREA represents both elected officials and administrative leadership, working collaboratively to advance regional priorities. PREA’s role is to advocate for responsible development, support economic diversification, and ensure communities are informed, engaged, and prepared for emerging energy opportunities.
With strong regional alignment and established leadership, PREA serves as a trusted bridge between government, industry, and communities. PREA is committed to establishing the Peace Region as Alberta’s nuclear hub, supporting responsible development, regional prosperity, and long-term energy leadership. PREA will encourage the highest standards from both provincial and federal partners to ensure health, safety, and environmental stewardship remain critical components of any project development.
"The release of our Position Paper, which was endorsed by eight municipalities in our Region, provides strong support to the Province of Alberta in its journey to create a new public policy framework around the development of nuclear energy in our province. This Position Paper strongly endorses our Region as the potential location for nuclear energy development and sets out a commitment to the people in Northwestern Alberta that the dialogue, learning, education and full engagement around nuclear energy needs to continue to take place,” stated Chair Terry Ungarian.
Today’s release of the Position Paper entitled “Building a Social License for Nuclear Energy Development in Northwestern Alberta” outlines a careful balance of support for nuclear energy while maintaining a strong commitment to continued education, conversation, dialogue and engagement with the communities and residents of the Peace Region. PREA and Northwestern Alberta have the opportunity to become an advocate to advancing next generation energy development by responsibly advancing discussions, dialogue, and encouraging engagement around nuclear technologies that support economic growth, grid reliability, industrial competitiveness, and emissions reduction.
“We fully understand as a Region, that nuclear energy development in Alberta may be years away. We also comprehend that by understanding, learning and educating ourselves through best practices and practical learning as well as engagement with experts, proponents, government stakeholders and bringing together a venue for professional conversations, that we are preparing our communities, our residents and business infrastructure for the future of nuclear energy development,” stated Vice Chair Robert Willing.
“We definitely want the Province of Alberta, the Canadian Government, nuclear energy development proponents and future nuclear chain supply management businesses to understand and be advised that the Peace Region is ready to support these new energy development projects in the future. We also realize that as communities, we need to be prepared to review our infrastructure, be positioned for nuclear growth and be a leader in advocating for economic prosperity for the entire Peace Region,” stated Chair Ungarian.
