Aggressive driving results in an unnecessary increased risk of a dangerous or deadly outcome, and Manning RCMP wants everyone to focus civilized driving behaviour this August.
Aggressive driving includes a range of risky behaviours that are intentional and not due to driver error. These include:
• excessive speed and street racing
• tailgating
• weaving in and out of traffic
• failing to yield
• swearing, yelling, and gesturing at other drivers, cyclists, or pedestrians
• other driving actions undertaken in an aggressive manner
These are behaviours not related to road conditions, weather, or other factors outside a driver's control. They are choices a driver makes while driving and their response to other road users.
Alberta speeding demerits:
• Up to 15km/h over: 2 demerits
• 16-30km/h over: 3 demerits
• 31-50km/h over” 4 demerits
• 51km/h or more over: 6 demerits with possibly a mandatory court appearance.
“Excessive speeding is one of the leading contributors to serious and fatal motor vehicle collisions. As vehicle speeds increase, a driver’s ability to perceive hazards and safely control their vehicle decreases significantly. At the same time, the distance required to stop increases, leaving less opportunity to avoid a collision. With the amount of animal strikes in our area the higher speeds greatly increase the force of impact, putting the driver and passengers at much greater risk. The driver of the vehicle caught doing 164km/h in a 100km/h zone(pictured) earned a $725 fine plus 6 demerit points as well as an inevitable spike in their insurance premiums. Not worth it. Plan ahead and give yourself enough extra time to get where you are going safely.” - Cpl. David Fogarty
