As students head back to class, the Manning RCMP is asking both drivers and pedestrians to be extra cautious at crosswalks and intersections near schools.
With more foot traffic during morning and afternoon commutes, the risk of collisions increases, especially if drivers or pedestrians are distracted.
Safety tips for drivers:
- Slow down near crosswalks and intersections.
- Be prepared to stop when approaching a marked crosswalk, even if the pedestrian hasn’t stepped onto the road yet.
- Obey crossing guards and yield to pedestrians at all marked and unmarked crosswalks.
- Avoid passing other vehicles stopped at a crosswalk, as they may be yielding to someone you can’t see.
Safety tips for students and pedestrians:
- Always look both ways before crossing.
- Use designated crosswalks and obey crossing guards.
- Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before stepping onto the road.
- Put away phones and remove headphones while crossing.
“It’s important for everyone, drivers and pedestrians alike, to be vigilant in their surroundings. Drivers are encouraged to put away distractions, obey the posted speed limits, and be especially mindful around the school zones. The town has also painted fresh crosswalks for pedestrians to use in the school area. Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is currently a $810 fine and 4 demerit points. We at the RCMP will be making regular patrols and will have a heightened presence as the school year starts.
