Community Initiatives, Engagement, and Advocacy

  • Council will be donating $550 to the RISK (Reduce Injury with Student Knowledge) Program. The RISK program educates students about the consequences of risks such as distracted driving, impaired driving, and not wearing seatbelts.
  • Deputy Reeve Kayln Schug, Councillors Linda Halabisky and Brent Reese will be attending the ACCPA (Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association) One-Day forum in Peace River on October 28. Council also contributed $1000.00 to the event.
  • Council moved to contribute $5000.00 to the first Northern Alberta Tourism Summit taking place in 2027. The summit is a collaborative initiative of Mighty Peace Tourism, Grande Prairie Regional Tourism and Lakes of the North Tourism in Slave Lake. Tourism operators, municipalities, Indigenous tourism partners, destination organizations, economic development professionals and other industry stakeholders from across northern Alberta will gather to focus on practical learning, collaboration and opportunities to strengthen northern tourism businesses and communities. 
  • Reeve Terry Ungarian, on behalf of PREA (Peace Regional Energy Alliance), will be attending the CNA (Canadian Nuclear Association) West event in Calgary November 2-4.
  • Councillors Brent Reese, Gloria Dechant, Linda Halabisky and Deputy Reeve Kayln Schug will attend the Small Business Awards on Friday, October 23 at the Battle River Ag Hall.
  • A letter of support will be provided to the Regional Drainage Committee for an ACP (Alberta Community Partnership) grant application to help support the hiring of a consultant to gather information from Ministry archives and to develop a detailed report outlining issues and potential solutions to manage drainage systems. 

Planning & Development

  • Subdivision at NW-32-92-22-W5 to create a 4.5-hectare (11.0-acre) parcel has been approved, subject to conditions. 
  • Subdivision at NE-18-87-23-W5 to create a 7.2-hectare (17.8-acre) parcel has been approved, subject to conditions. 
  • First reading of the proposed Land Use Bylaw Amendment #26-61-512. The subsequent public hearing will take place on Tuesday, October 13 at 11 am. Details on the proposed amendment can be found on the County website at countyofnorthernlights.com/public-hearings 

Infrastructure

  • After numerous repeated issues, the boilers at the County administration office will be replaced at an estimated cost of $43,780.00, ahead of the upcoming winter season.
