Subdividing Land

Subdivision is the process of dividing a parcel of land into multiple sections, each with its own legal title. This process is essential for proper land use management and planning. The Municipal Government Act (MGA) and the Subdivision and Development Regulation regulate the subdivision process, with the Council serving as the approving authority in the County.

There are several reasons you may consider subdivision, including, but not limited to:

  • Selling off farmland while retaining ownership of your home, known as farmstead separation

  • Allowing different ownership of the land rather than joint ownership

  • Enabling the sale of some or all of the land for financial reasons

Individuals looking to create two or more lots from a single parcel of land must obtain subdivision approval from the County by submitting a Subdivision Application. The subdivision approval process typically takes around 60 days, although it may take longer if application extensions are approved.
