Road Programs & Services
The County believes in protecting the road network within the County from damage caused by heavy traffic. This is accomplished through the imposing of road bans and by publicly advising road users of such bans. The road bans may be seasonal or directly related to the road weight capacity. Any vehicles travelling within the county that exceed either the normal or seasonal load weight limits must apply for and obtain a permit to transport. Permits may be applied for from Roadata at 1.888.830.7623.
The County annually advertises for applications for dust control. Dust control agents are applied for a length of 200 meters upon approval. The primary dust control agent used by the municipality is calcium chloride. Applications must be completed by the close of the last business day in April. Applicants requesting dust control on secondary highways must make a request to Alberta Transportation who will then contact the County.
All major and secondary highways within the County of Northern Lights are under the jurisdiction of Alberta Transportation.
For County roads, Public Works strives to maintain good winter driving conditions on main gravel surfaces by plowing within 72 hours of last snowfall. Snowplowing priority is as follows:

- main routes
- roads to occupied residences and school bus routes
- flagged driveways
- field access roads (as requested)*
* field access roads shall not be maintained or inspected on a regular basis through the winter months unless an affected landowner requires access to his field and submits a request for the road to be opened.
Snowplowing Services Program
Private driveways may be plowed during public road plowing if it is operationally effective. Prior to any work taking place on private land, the applicant must sign a County snowplowing agreement and comply with the conditions of the snowplowing policy.
Privately Owned Gravel Pits
The activity of removing or hauling sand or gravel from any private gravel pit within in the County falls under the Community Aggregate Payment Levy Bylaw No. 06-32-177 and requires quarterly reporting to the County.
Report a Maintenance Issue Program
The County of Northern Lights encourages residents to report any on-site or general issues that would require attention from the County. This would include, but is not limited to, culvert problems, downed signage, road damage, etc. that is on County property.
The safety coordinator manages and promotes the County safety program to ensure that workplace health and safety is maintained in accordance with the Provincial Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and County safety policies. This entails performing inspections of worksites, facilities, investigating incidents/accidents, holding safety meetings, arranging safety courses for staff, coordinating requirements under the Provincial/Federal Commercial Vehicle Safety Compliance for our heavy equipment fleet that applies to this program, organizing annual staff safety orientation.
