Survey for Potential Changes to MGA and LAEA
Share Your Thoughts on Potential Changes to Municipal Government and Local Authorities Election Acts
Municipal Affairs is seeking feedback from the public and stakeholders regarding possible legislative amendments related to councillor accountability under the Municipal Government Act (MGA) and modifications to the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA).
The aim of these changes is to enhance accountability and reinforce public confidence in local elections and elected officials in Alberta municipalities.
The Municipal Government Act (MGA) survey focuses on six areas related to councillor accountability:
- Councillor training
- Allowing council to meet in private
- Disqualification rules for councillors
- Minister’s authority to remove a councillor
- Changes to recall legislation
- Clarify conflicts of interest
The LAEA survey focuses on five main areas:
- Voter eligibility
- Voter list
- Political parties
- Advance voting
- Runoff elections for Chief Elected Officials
We encourage you to share your insights on these potential changes through an online survey, which is available from November 7, 2023, to December 6, 2023.
